Why the Particle Model Comes First
Children can sort ice, milk and steam into three piles without understanding anything. What makes this science is the model: particles packed tight and locked (solid), particles touching but sliding (liquid), particles flying apart (gas). Once a child holds that picture, they can predict things they were never taught -- why gas fills a room, why liquid takes the shape of its cup, why a solid keeps its shape when you move it. The melting experiment then shows a substance crossing between two states without becoming a different substance, which is a genuinely counter-intuitive idea worth an afternoon.

Preparation
Print the worksheet. Get an ice cube ready but do not take it out of the freezer until the prediction is written down -- the guess must come before the evidence, and a melting cube waits for nobody.

Study the three particle boxes at the top. Ask: "Why can gas fill the whole room but a rock cannot?"

Sort the word bank into the solid, liquid and gas columns.

Argue about the tricky ones. Is honey a liquid? (Yes -- a slow one.) Is sand a solid? (Each grain is, yes.)

Now the experiment. Write the start time and the predicted melting time BEFORE the ice comes out.

Watch, do something else, come back. Write the real finish time.

Compare the guess and the result. Then ask: what would make it melt faster, and how would you test that fairly?
Assistance for Kids and Parents

Simpler Version
Do only the sorting section with six obvious items. Skip the timing and just watch the ice melt.
More Challenge
Race two ice cubes: one on a plate, one in a cup of water. Predict which wins, then explain the result. (Water conducts heat far better than air.)
Full Cycle
Melt the ice, then boil the water (adult only) and watch it become gas. Same substance, all three states, one afternoon.
