Why Machines Are Ideas, Not Gadgets
A six-year-old thinks a machine is something with a motor. The six simple machines quietly dismantle that: a ramp has no moving parts and is still a machine, because a machine is anything that changes the size or direction of a force. Once a child can see the lever in a bottle opener and the wedge in a knife, the built environment stops being scenery and becomes a set of solved problems. The final question -- why a ramp helps when it does not reduce the weight -- is genuinely deep, and a seven-year-old can get there.

Preparation
Print the worksheet. Have the word bank visible (it is printed on the sheet). Before starting, quietly note a few real examples in your own home so you can nudge if the hunt stalls -- door handles, scissors, a bottle opener, the blinds.

Look at each drawing and write its name using the word bank.

For each machine, say out loud what it makes easier: "A ramp means you push instead of lift."

Now go on the hunt. Walk the house together and find a real one of each. Write down where you found it.

Scissors are two levers AND two wedges -- if your child spots that, they have understood the idea.

Sit down with the think-about-it question: a ramp does not make the box lighter, so why is it easier?

Test it: slide a heavy book up a tilted tray, then lift it straight up. Which felt easier? Which took longer?
Assistance for Kids and Parents
- arrow_rightBuild a lever with a ruler and a pencil. Move the pencil (the fulcrum) closer to the load and the lifting gets dramatically easier -- let them feel it.
