Why the Method Matters More Than the Experiment

Most children's science is a demonstration: an adult knows the answer, the child watches it happen, everyone claps. Real science is the opposite -- nobody knows the answer, so you write down what you expect, then find out. This page is deliberately blank and reusable because the goal is the shape of the process, not any one result. The hardest and most valuable box is 'my guess', written before the evidence arrives, because it forces a child to commit and then be publicly, safely wrong. That is the exact skill that makes a scientist, and the exact one most schooling accidentally trains out.

Preparation

Print several copies. Each printed sheet suggests a different starter question -- but the suggestion is written faintly, in the question box, precisely so your child can cross it out and write their own. Do not talk them out of a badly designed experiment on the first go; the flaw is a better teacher than your correction.

    Pick a question -- the printed suggestion, or their own. Their own is better.

    Write the guess and, crucially, the BECAUSE. "I think the big wings fly further because they catch more air."

    List the materials. Keep it to things in the house.

    Write the steps in order. Then ask: "Could a stranger do this experiment with only these steps?"

    Run it. Write only what actually happened in the results box -- facts, not feelings, not explanations.

    Last: what did you learn, and what would you test next? A good experiment always leaves a next question.

Assistance for Kids and Parents

  • arrow_rightNever say 'that's wrong' about a hypothesis. Say 'let's find out'. The whole page depends on it being safe to be wrong.
  • arrow_rightWatch for the results box filling with explanation ('because the air pushed it'). Send it back: what did you SEE?
  • arrow_rightChange one thing only. If they change the wings AND the paper AND the throw, the experiment says nothing.
  • arrow_rightRepeat each test three times. One flight is luck, three is evidence -- this is the fastest way to teach reliability.
  • arrow_rightKeep the completed sheets in a folder. Watching their own method get sharper over months is the real reward.

Variations & Extensions

Simpler Version

Fill in only boxes 1, 2 and 5 (question, guess, what happened). Talk the rest through out loud.

More Challenge

Demand a fair test: one variable changed, everything else held constant, three repeats, and an average. Then let them find the flaw in their own design.

Peer Review

Swap completed journals with a sibling or friend. Can they repeat the experiment using only the written steps? If not, the method was not clear enough.
