Predict whether everyday objects will sink or float, then test them in water and record what really happened -- a child's first controlled experiment.

Why Predicting Before Testing Matters
The value of this activity is not the answer -- it is the gap between the guess and the result. When a child commits to a prediction out loud, they build a mental model; when the water proves them wrong, that model updates. This is the entire scientific method compressed into thirty seconds, and at 4-6 years it is the first time a child can hold a prediction in mind long enough to be surprised by it. A wrong guess that gets tested teaches far more than a right guess that never does.

Preparation
Print the worksheet. Fill a clear bowl with water and gather six objects -- mix them so some are heavy but float (a big cork) and some are light but sink (a paper clip). Fill in the prediction columns BEFORE the objects go anywhere near the water.

Name each object together and write it (or draw it) in the first column.

Ask: "Do you think it will sink or float?" Tick the guess column. Do not correct the guess.

Only now, drop the object in. Watch together.

Tick what really happened. Say it out loud: "You guessed float, and it floated!" or "You guessed sink, and it floated -- surprise!"

After all six, ask the big question: "Is it true that heavy things always sink?"

Test the surprise: a heavy cork floats, a tiny paper clip sinks. Let the contradiction sit.
Assistance for Kids and Parents
- arrow_rightPraise the prediction, not the correctness. "Good guess" beats "that's right".

Variations & Extensions
Simpler Version
Use only three objects, and pick obvious ones (a rock, a leaf, a plastic lid). Skip the written notice section and just talk about it.
More Challenge
Give your child a lump of modelling clay. It sinks. Now ask them to change its SHAPE so it floats -- a boat. Same weight, different result.
Sort First
Before testing, sort all objects into two piles by prediction. Then test the whole pile at once and see how many were right.
